General Introduction
Cyclone separator is a kind of equipment used for separating gas-solid system or liquid-solid system. The working principle is that the solid particles or droplets with large inertia centrifugal force are separated from the outer wall by the rotating motion caused by the tangential introduction of air flow. The main characteristics of cyclone separator are simple structure, high operating flexibility, high efficiency, convenient management and maintenance, low cost. It is used for collecting dust with diameter of 5-10 μm. It is widely used in pharmaceutical industry. It is especially suitable for dust particles which are thicker and contain more dust. Under high temperature and high pressure conditions, it is also often used as an internal separation device in fluidized bed reactor or as a pre-separator. It is a widely used separation equipment in industry.

It is used for collecting dust with diameter of 5-10 micron. It is widely used in pharmaceutical industry. It is especially suitable for dust particles which are thicker and contain more dust. It is also often used as internal separation device for fluidized bed under high temperature and pressure conditions, or as a pre-separator. However, its separation efficiency for fine dust particles(such as diameter < 5 micron) is low, and the separation efficiency of the fine powder can only reach 70%-90%. In order to improve dust removal efficiency and reduce resistance, many types of cyclone separators, such as spiral type, bypass type, diffusion type, swirl type and multi-tube type, have been developed.
The movement of gas and solid particles in a cyclone separator is very complex. There are tangential, radial and axial velocities at any point in the cyclone separator, which vary with the radius of rotation. Proper gas velocity should be controller in practice. Experiments show that the separation efficiency is not high because the gas velocity is too small. However, the high gas velocity will lead to eddy current and backmixing, which will also reduce the separation efficiency.
A high speed rotating (air)flow is established within a cylindrical or conical container called a cyclone. Air flows in a spiral pattern, beginning at the top (wide end) of the cyclone and ending at the bottom (narrow) end before exiting the cyclone in a straight stream through the center of the cyclone and out the top.
Larger (denser) particles in the rotating stream have too much inertia to follow the tight curve of the stream and strike the outside wall, falling then to the bottom of the cyclone where they can be removed.
In a conical system, as the rotating flow moves towards the narrow end of the cyclone the rotational radius of the stream is reduced, separating smaller and smaller particles.
