Product Description

 

A superheater is a device used to convert saturated steam or wet steam into superheated steam or dry steam. Superheated steam is used in steam turbines for electricity generation, steam engines, and in processes such as steam reforming. There are three types of superheaters: radiant, convection, and separately fired. A superheater can vary in size from a few tens of feet to several hundred feet (a few metres to some hundred metres).

Reheaters and superheaters are a set of tubes located in the boiler. Steam from the water walls passes to the superheaters where it is heated above its saturation temperature until the maximum required operating temperature is achieved. The superheated steam then flows through the main steam piping to the high-pressure turbine. Exhaust steam from the high-pressure turbine is guided to the boiler for reheating and from there to the intermediate and low-pressure turbines. High reheating temperatures improve the output and efficiency of a power plant.

Classification

 

Super Heater Types:

A radiant superheater is placed directly in the combustion chamber.

A convection superheater is located in the path of the hot gases.

A separately fired superheater, as its name implies, is totally separated from the boiler.

Radiant superheaters are located directly within the combustion chamber of the boiler itself. This arrangement allows for the burner from the boiler to heat both the boiler tubing and the superheater tubes, making radiant superheaters highly effective devices. These are most commonly found in steam power plants and also were widely used in steam automobiles. 

 

Convection superheaters are most commonly found on locomotives. Much like a convection oven, this type of superheater utilizes the hot gases from the burner to reheat the steam. A convection superheater can be extremely efficient, because most of the thermal energy is given only to the boiler tubing. These are also found in power plants, but they were mostly implemented in steam locomotives.
