Product Functions of Superheater and Reheater


Superheater

  1. In a thermal power plant, the superheater’s job is crucial. It gets rid of the remaining 1 to 2% moisture in the saturated steam leaving the boiler and cranks up its temperature way above the saturation point. This makes the steam more powerful and efficient.
  2. Superheating doesn’t just boost the overall efficiency of the power generation cycle—it also prevents excessive condensation in the turbine’s final stages. Why’s that important? Because too much condensation can damage the turbine blades over time. So, the superheater helps keep the turbine running smoothly and lasts longer.
  3. Here’s how it works: The superheater uses the heat from the furnace’s combustion gases. This heat dries out the steam completely and then superheats it, giving it that extra temperature boost needed for efficient power production.
  4. Superheaters are designed with multiple tube circuits running side by side. These circuits have one or more return bends and connect to headers. This setup helps distribute the steam evenly and maximizes heat transfer.

Reheater

  1. Reheaters have a specific role: they reheat the steam that’s already expanded a bit in the turbine. By doing this, they ensure the steam stays as dry as possible all the way through the turbine’s last stage. Dry steam means better performance and less wear on the turbine components.
  2. You can find reheaters in different spots within utility boilers, usually before or after the convective superheater in the convective zone. In modern high - pressure boilers, reheaters typically come in two parts.
  3. The first part, or primary section, sits in the convective zone, where it starts the reheating process. The second part, the secondary section, hangs right at the furnace exit, getting the steam up to its final, optimal temperature.
  4. When designing reheaters, engineers follow similar principles as they do for superheaters. Both need to handle high temperatures and efficiently transfer heat.
  5. Reheaters and superheaters might have the same output temperatures, but the steam pressure in reheaters is only around 20 - 25% of what’s in superheaters. That lower pressure means we can use lower - grade steel alloys for reheaters, which helps cut down on costs without sacrificing performance.
