Description

 

1 A steam drum is a standard feature of a water-tube boiler.
2 It is a reservoir of water/steam at the top end of the water tubes.
3 The drum stores the steam generated in the water tubes and acts as a phase-separator for the steam/water mixture.
4 The difference in densities between hot and cold water helps in the accumulation of the "hotter"-water/and saturated-steam into the steam-drum.
5 Initially the single drum at the bottom and three drums on the top were connected through a network of tubes which were welded to the drums above and the single drum below.

 

Function

 

1 A steam drum is used alone or in company mud-drum/feed water drum located on the lower level.
2 A boiler with the steam drum and mud / water drum called a bi-drum boiler and steam drum boilers with only so-called mono-drum boiler.
3 Construction of bi-drum boiler normally intended for low pressure boiler-rating while the mono-drum largely designed for high pressure ratings.
4 Separated vapor is pulled out from the top of the drum and distributed to the process.
5 Further heating of the saturated vapor will make superheated steam is typically used to drive steam turbines.
6 Saturated vapor is pulled from above the drum and re-enters the furnace through a superheater.
7 Mixture of steam and water entering the steam drum through riser tubes, internal drum consisting of demister separates water droplets from steam to produce dry steam.
8 Saturated water vapor at the bottom of the drum flows down through the downcomer pipe, usually heated, for the header and water drums.
9 The feed water is also fed to the boiler drum through the steam feed pipe extending inside the drum, along the steam drum.

 

Technical requirements:

 

1 Design and fabrication will be in accordance w/ASME section I,2017 edition and specification of manufacturing.
2 All dimensions are in mm unless therwise specified.
3 All transverse and circumferential welds shall do RT inspection
4 The welds of attachments to drum shall do PT inspection
5 PWHT per PW-391S required for the whole steam drum after welds are complete.
6 Ends prepared for field welding will be protected with a coat of deoxaluminate 2'' from the end and then capped and sealed with tape to provide an essentially water tight seal.
7 The drum will be coated externally with one coat of primer paint(except for stainless steel).
8 The flange shall be well protected

 

Attention

 

Boiler steam drum water level is one of the most important power plant parameters to both measure and control. Control of the proper water level in the boiler is critical for safe operation of the boiler. If the level is too low, boiler tubes will be damaged by overheating. If the level is too high, steam separators will not function properly, temperature control will be difficult, and the superheater tubes and turbine could be damaged by moisture or water treatment chemical carryover.
